Sugarite Canyon
Beaver Pond Guided Bird Walk
This walk along Chicorica Creek boasts a variety of habitats including willow thickets and cottonwood forest. In recent years beavers have dammed the creek, creating a wetland that is visited by many migrant and breeding songbirds. Possible bird species include: Dusky Flycatcher, Plumbeous and Warbling Vireos, MacGillivray's and Yellow Warblers, and Western Tanager. Appropriate for all levels of birders. Physical difficulty: Moderate; flat walking, but we may stray off trail for short distances. May be uneven terrain and close encounters with dense vegetation. Meet at Lake Alice Campground. Lake Maloya Guided Bird Walk
Enjoy the high country while looking for some of the over 150 bird species that have been sighted around Lake Maloya. Lake Maloya is the major waterbody in Sugarite Canyon and it attracts a variety of birds. Possible bird species include: Various ducks and geese, Lewis's Woodpecker, Western Wood-Pewee, Violet-green Swallow, Pygmy Nuthatch, Western Bluebird, and Spotted Towhee. Appropriate for all levels of birders. Physical difficulty: Easy; level trails and dirt roads. Meet at Lake Maloya trailhead (before crossing over the dam). The regular Park Entrance Fee applies. Binoculars: Care and Use
Binoculars are versatile tools that provide enlarged images of distant objects, used in a variety of settings, such as hiking, wildlife viewing, birding, hunting, stargazing, golf, sports events, and theater. Before you go on the Afternoon Bird Hikes at Sugarite Canyon, stop by the Visitor Center and learn the "Tricks of the Trade" about how to use and focus your binoculars, try a few of our models out. Watch a short video and practice cleaning and protecting your optics. We will have spotting scopes and a monocular for you to try out. Start enjoying your bird, not fussing with your field glasses. Meeting at the Visitor Center. The regular Park Entrance Fee applies. Please bring exact cash or check or display a valid New Mexico State Parks annual pass.

Kiwanis Club Youth Fish Derby
The Kiwanis club youth fishing derby will occur on Saturday 6/1/2024. The derby begins at 8 AM in the Boat Ramp parking area of Lake Maloya. Final youth contestant catches must be submitted for weigh out by 12 PM. Registration information for the Kiwanis fishing derby can be attained from the Raton Kiwanis Club at 131 N Second Street, Raton NM 87740 phone: 505-445-4746 or Sugarite Canyon Visitor Center starting May 1st,2024 The regular Park Entrance Fee applies. Kiwanis Club annual Fish Derby
The week-long adult fishing derby will begin on May 25, 2024. The first 30 tagged fish will receive prizes during the course of the event. Fish must be presented with their tag still in them for a prize. Daily door prizes will be drawn from the Sugarite Canyon Visitor Center based of derby registrants. Door prize winners must claim their prize by the final day of the adult derby (6/2/2024). The tagged fish ticket selection will occur at 12PM on Sunday, June 2nd, 2024. Purgatory 4 Adventure Relay
Sugarite Canyon State Park is proud to host the trail run and kayak trials of the race put on by City of Trinidad Outdoor Recreation Dept. The Purgatory 4 Adventure Relay challenges competitors across the country to go halfway to hell and back. Run through the rugged terrain of Sugarite Canyon State Park in Northeastern New Mexico, paddle a course on Lake Maloya at 7,500 feet, bike up to 8,500 feet over San Francisco Pass and into Southern Colorado, then prove your prowess on a challenging shotgun shooting course at Trinidad State College's Prator Gun Range. Christmas on the Chicorica
The Friends of Sugarite Canyon will be hosting their annual Christmas on chicorica creek in the Sugarite Canyon Boardwalk area. Donations are appreciated. Come enjoy a walk among the decorated Riverwalk complete with star gazing and warm beverages. Marshmallow roasting over a barrel fire will be available to visitors. Dress warmly as the event occurs predominantly outdoors. Santa and the his coal miner friend will be present for photographs from 5-7:30pm.
